F2 introduces new Rookie Champion award for 2012
Top-scoring newcomer to receive F2 winter testing prize
As well as offering a Williams F1 test for the champion and GP2
tests for second and third, Formula Two is pleased to confirm it
will introduce a new Rookie Champion award in 2012 for first time
drivers.
The highest-scoring rookie driver at the end of the 2012 FIA
Formula Two Championship will be awarded two days of F2 winter
testing - aiding with their preparations for a title assault in
their second season of F2.
Any driver who has competed in less than two F2 events before the
start of the season will automatically become eligible for the
category, with the winning driver being the one to have scored the
most points in the final championship standings.
The winner's prize will take part at the end of the year as part of
F2's annual winter test programme at some of Europe's best renowned
circuits.
Commenting on the news, F2 Championship Coordinator James Gornall
said: "Formula Two already offers fantastic rewards to its drivers,
including the ultimate prize of a full test with the Williams F1
team for the champion and GP2 tests for the second and third placed
drivers. By introducing the Rookie Champion award it gives 2012
rookies the springboard they need to mount a title challenge in the
2013 FIA Formula Two Championship."
Last year saw 14 newcomers take part in the series including
Christopher Zanella and Ramon Piñeiro, who finished an
impressive second and third in the overall championship
standings.
