After 14 races, six countries, seven different race winners and
plenty of superb racing, this weekend in Monza marks the conclusion
of the 2012 FIA Formula Two Championship where this year's champion
will be crowned.
Three drivers remain in the hunt for the prestigious title -
Luciano Bacheta, Mathéo Tuscher and Markus Pommer - with the Comma
Oil-backed Bacheta the favourite to scoop the honours and a
Williams F1 test thanks to his 33.5 point advantage. The Brit is no
stranger to the 5.793km Italian track too and recorded his best F2
result of 2011 here with fifth. However, given both Tuscher and
Pommer have outscored Bacheta throughout the second half of the
season, with Markus also winning last time out in Hungary, anything
can happen this weekend.
The 5.793km Monza circuit is the fastest on the championship
calendar and characterised by a series of long straights and tight
chicanes. And although the Italian track may look deceptively
simple, the challenge of consistently finding the limit in
low-downforce setup demands skill and finesse from the
drivers.
Race preparations begin with pre-event testing on Thursday where
the F2 regulars will be joined by a new face in the form of Latvian
Harald Schlegelmilch who brings with him a broad range of single
seater experience. After testing, it's on to the race weekend and
the battle to see who will lift the championship trophy come
Sunday.
The final rounds (15 & 16) of the 2012 FIA Formula Two
Championship take place at Monza, Italy, from 7-9 September with
full coverage, including live web streaming, on the F2
website.
