Kazim Vasiliauskas reflects on the kind yet competitive
nature of Henry Surtees:
"Henry was the first driver I met at the F2 car presentation. We
were talking about the new car and he was polite and honest - I can
say only good words about him.
"Henry and I were closely matched on the track and we were
always close to each other. I was faster in Valencia and Spa and he
was faster in Brno and Brands Hatch. Whenever I was looking at the
lap times I would compare with Henry, because he was 18-years-old
like me and he was my main opponent.
"Henry came to F2 from Formula Renault and I think he surprised
people with his speed. I'm sure that he was working much harder
than some other drivers to reach those results and in my opinion he
was one of the best drivers.
"Another thing which impressed me so much was Henry and his
father working together. They were like one person working with
such a big passion. I think every person can learn from their
loving son and father relationship.
"Henry and I fought for third place during the opening race
at Brands Hatch - I made a mistake and Henry took the place.
After the race I was really disappointed but now I'm very happy
that Henry scored a magnificent podium. I'm happy that he felt this
feeling to be on the podium in F2 and I think this day was one of
the best in his life.
"I am very proud that I raced with Henry Surtees - a driver who
should have gone on to race in F1 in the future.
"Rest in peace Henry"
