Max Snegirev was the first to get to grips with Formula Two's first visit to the Hungaroring by topping the timesheets during this morning's (Thursday) opening test session.
The 25-year-old Russian set a best time of 1:36.723s late in the
60-minute session to just wrestle the top spot away from
Luciano Bacheta by a mere 0.084s. Mihai Marinescu, competing at his
adopted home circuit, finished third ahead of Daniel McKenzie and
Kevin Mirocha.
In warm but overcast conditions, championship leader Bacheta was
the first to take to the track and the early pace setter - one
year on since he had his barrel roll crash here in GP3. Nearest
championship rival Mathéo Tuscher was also looking quick as was
Christopher Zanella and Hector Hurst.
Marinescu had moved up amongst the front runners by the halfway stage as had Slovakian newcomer Richard Gonda with the 18-year-old going on to finish a respectable sixth in his first official F2 outing.
Bacheta still led as the session drew to a close until Snegirev hooked a superb late lap to go top. Zanella, currently lying third in the drivers' standings, finished seventh from Hurst, Plamen Kralev and Alex Fontana.
Zimbabwean Axcil Jefferies finished P15 after electing to complete just a handful of installation laps, while Kourosh Khani was absent from the test due to visa issues which were unable to be resolved in time.
Today's second test session gets underway at 11:20 (local time) with full coverage and live timing available on the F2 website.
