Hancock homing in on F2 return
Briton targets first full season in international motorsport
Ollie Hancock is targeting a return to the FIA Formula Two
Championship in 2010 as he looks to build upon a promising set of
performances at the final three rounds of last season.
The 22-year-old took a remarkable top ten finish on his F2
debut in Oschersleben, Germany, last September. After a part season
in the F1 feeder series during 2009, Hancock is now preparing for a
full championship assault this coming season.
"I want to come back to F2 for a title attack," said Hancock,
"it is the title or nothing for me this year. This is the logical
step for me as it gives me a chance to reach Formula One. Soucek
made it possible and I'm only out to do the same, nothing less.
"I learnt a lot last year - I got quicker every time I got in
the car and I ended up with good pace during the final round in
Barcelona. I learnt how to set the car up to suit my style and I
just trusted my instincts rather than using someone else's set-up,
which worked much better for me."
Hancock said he is '100% committed to returning to F2' this
season and says that the unfair playing field of comparable
championships has left him in no doubt as to where he wants to race
in 2010.
"Look at Soucek - he pretty much blew everyone away in F2 last
year in equal equipment and he then performed really well when
testing in F1," noted Ollie. "He didn't have that opportunity when
he was in GP2 because if you're not running with one of the top
teams then you don't have a chance - it's as simple as that. It is
the same problem in Formula Renault 3.5, but in F2 everything is
equal and that is great."
Whilst the young Briton has not yet secured a drive in the 2010
FIA Formula Two Championship line-up, the former Formula Renault
2.0 UK BARC champion is confident of being on the grid for the
opening rounds at Silverstone on 17/18 April.
"It is a realistic budget," he concluded. "F2 has a huge appeal
to the outside public and that really helps to raise awareness and
ultimately backing. Many drivers are struggling to find the budget
for this season but I have several leads and many people are
interested so we will see what happens - I am really hopeful."
