Driver Summaries: Rounds 9 & 10 Donington Park
Rounds nine and ten of the 2009 FIA Formula Two
Championship took place at Donington Park at the
weekend and the official F2 website has taken a
look at each driver's performance:
Andy Soucek - R1: 1st,
R2: 4th
Andy Soucek was in imperious form at Donington Park, taking a
resounding win in race one and a well-deserved fourth in race two
to take a commanding lead in the championship. The Spaniard had
high hopes going into the weekend, having impressed in mid-season
testing at the circuit, and it was a measure of his expectations
that he came away slightly disappointed despite qualifying third
and sixth for the two races. The feeling did not last long; a
perfect start in race one saw him overtake Aleshin and Hegewald
before the first corner, and he never looked back on his way to a
dominant third win of the season. His healthy points lead did
nothing to diminish his hunger in race two, and a superb manoeuvre
to pass Hohenthal at Craner Curves was followed by a thrilling
battle with Bortolotti for third. He eventually settled for fourth,
and with it a 22-point lead in the championship over nearest rival
Robert Wickens.
Robert Wickens - R1:
DNF, R2: DNF
The Canadian driver endured a weekend to forget at Donington Park.
Robert suffered an engine failure during qualifying one,
but had already posted a time good enough for ninth on
the grid. He then took eighth in qualifying two despite
encountering traffic whilst on new tyres. Having made his way up to
fifth in the opening race, his engine began to misfire and he was
eventually forced to retire. The F2 team identified an obscure
problem with a chassis wiring room and did a great job to fix it in
time for race two. The 20-year-old 's race was compromised when he
went off on at Old Hairpin on the opening lap, though, and his car
suffered permanent damage when he tangled with Alex Brundle at the
Craner Curves. Wickens failed to score any points but still remains
second overall in the championship.
Julien Jousse - R1:
7th, R2: 1st
It was a weekend of firsts for Julien Jousse, the Frenchman
converting his maiden pole position into a dominant maiden victory
in race two. His win was a just reward for superb pace throughout
the weekend - he set the fastest lap in both races, and was almost
a second a lap quicker than the rest of the field in race two.
Jousse also claimed seventh in race one to score 12 points from the
weekend - his strongest performance of the year - and he now lies
third in the championship, just two points behind Robert Wickens in
second.
Tobias Hegewald -
R1: 3rd, R2: 6th
Tobias enjoyed a dramatic Saturday when he spun twice whilst trying
to find the limits, shortly before he grabbed his third pole
position of the season in emphatic style. After a slow
getaway at the start of the first race, the German was
part of an exhilarating three-way scrap for second position. He
eventually finished third, sandwiched between Mikhail Aleshin and
Miloš Pavlović. Hegewald also drove well during the
second race, taking sixth after starting ninth on the grid, and
enjoyed his best weeknd showing since his pair of wins at
Spa-Francorchamps in June.
Mirko
Bortolotti - R1: 10th, R2: 3rd
Bortolotti bounced back from a disappointing opening qualifying
session to take an impressive third during qualifying two. After
being stuck behind Jason Moore for much of the opening race, he was
unable to make the points, although he did eventually pass the
Englishman to take tenth. The Red Bull-backed racer returned to the
podium in the final race, after an exemplary display of defensive
driving as Sebastian Hohenthal and Andy Soucek pressured him
throughout.
Mikhail Aleshin - R1:
2nd, R2: 7th
One of only four drivers to have scored points at every round in
2009, Aleshin continued the trend with two fantastic races at
Donington Park, including a hard-earned second in the opening race.
Aleshin had made a great start from second on the grid, passing
polesitter Tobias Hegewald into the first corner, but was himself a
victim of Andy Soucek's perfect getaway. From there Hegewald made
Aleshin work extremely hard to keep second, but the Russian held on
to claim his third podium of the year. Another battling performance
followed in race two, with Aleshin finishing fractions behind
Hegewald in seventh, and he now lies fifth in the overall
standings.
Miloš
Pavlović - R1: DNF, R2: 8th
Donington proved to be a weekend of mixed fortunes for
Pavlović. The Serbian driver had impressed early on, setting
the second fastest time in free practice and then qualifying fifth
for race one. A good start saw him improve to fourth going into the
first corner, and he began to hunt down Tobias Hegewald in third -
completing a brilliant move down the inside through the Fogarty
Esses. Misfortune followed, however, when his car was struck by
technical problems and he retired from third. Another strong drive
in race two saw him come through from 11th at the start to finish
eighth, and he now sits ninth in the championship.
Philipp Eng - R1: 5th, R2:
10th
The 19-year-old arrived at Donington in good form, having achieved
his first victory in the F2 event at Brands Hatch, and he ran well
again this weekend to add to his already impressive points haul.
Having qualified tenth for both races, a sterling drive in race one
saw him pick up five places to finish fifth, little over a second
behind Italian Edoardo Piscopo. Philipp was in the thick of the
action again in race two, pressurising Carlos Iaconelli throughout
the race as the pair battled it out for ninth. He was unable to
find a way through, but his fifth points finish of the year means
he now lies seventh in the championship.
Nicola De Marco -
R1: DNF, R2: DNF
Nicola experienced his most disappointing weekend so far in Formula
Two at Donington, and was never able to find his usual pace during
practice and qualifying, starting from 21st and
19th respectively in the two races. In race one he was
eliminated following a first lap collision with Jens
Höing and was part of a multi-car incident at the Esses
on the first lap in race two, where Jason Moore, Armaan
Ebrahim, Jens Höing, Tom Gladdis and De Marco were all forced
into retirement.
Edoardo Piscopo - R1:
4th, R2: DNF
After an impressive performance in testing at Donington in the
lead-up to the event, Piscopo qualified consistently by taking
sixth and fifth on the grid respectively. He made up two places in
race one to take a well deserved fourth place - less than a second
away from taking his maiden podium. A regular points finisher,
Piscopo was prevented from adding to his tally in race two after
suffering gearbox problems - he was forced to retire on lap 12.
Carlos Iaconelli
- R1: DNF, R2: 9th
Carlos had a difficult weekend at Donington, although he came close
to recording his fourth points finish of the year when he placed
ninth in race two. The weekend had started well, Carlos setting the
eighth fastest time in free practice, but he struggled a little in
qualifying and took 17th and 12th respectively for the two races.
A collision with Jolyon Palmer brought his first race to a
premature close, and though he demonstrated good pace in race two
he will be determined to return to the points next time out at
Oschersleben.
Kazim
Vasiliauskas - R1: DNF, R2: 2nd
The Lithuanian is one of only four F2 driver to have scored points
at every weekend, and the 19-year-old is proving to be one of the
stars of the season. After qualifying seventh and fourth
respectively, (a season's best), he was unable to take the start of
race one due to a gearbox problem. Undeterred by the setback,
Kazim passed Sebastian Hohenthal and then Mirko Bortolotti
with a fantastic move around the outside at Redgate on the opening
lap of race two. He never looked back and took a comfortable second
place - his best in F2 so far - delighting his many supporters from
home who had made the journey to Donington to cheer him on.
Henri
Karjalainen - R1: 15th, R2: 13th
The Finn struggled to get to grips with the sweeping Donington Park
circuit early in the weekend, but he did make considerable progress
as the event wore on. Qualifying positions of 22nd and
18th were both improved upon during the two 25 lap
contests. Having been more than 1.7s off the pace during the
opening qualifying session, his race pace was only seven tenths of
a second off the fastest driver. Henri made up a total of 12 places
during the races to take 15th and 13th
respectively.
Armaan Ebrahim - R1:
8th, R2: DNF
The JK Racing-backed driver showed consistently good pace
throughout the weekend at Donington. 14th in free
practice was followed up with 12th and 14th
respectively during qualifying - his best performance of the
season. A notoriously good racer, Armaan made up four places during
race one to take the final championship point - his first since
Brno in June. Sadly he was caught up in a multi-car crash
at the Esses on the first lap in race two and retired on the
spot.
Alex Brundle - R1:
14th, R2: DNF
Donington was a challenging weekend for Alex, as incidents in both
races harmed his chances of breaking into the top ten. Due to the
extraordinary competitiveness of F2 he found himself
starting from 18th and 21st for the two races despite being little
over a second off the pole time. On both occasions he was able to
improve during the race, but a spin in race one after a close
moment with Henri Karjalainen was followed by a heavy crash in race
two, when Robert Wickens made contact with him at the
Craner Curves. Now 17th in the overall standings, he will be hoping
to regain momentum next time out at Oschersleben.
Tom Gladdis - R1:
17th, R2: DNF
Briton Tom Gladdis will be looking to put his weekend at Donington
behind him after incidents early on in both races put paid to his
hopes for another strong weekend. He suffered a puncture in the
first race and a spin on his way to the pit lane for a tyre change,
and ended the race two laps down in 17th place. Further misfortune
befell him in race two when he was caught up in a five car pile up
involving Jens Höing, Nicola De Marco, Armaan Ebrahim and
Jason Moore at the Fogarty Esses. Gladdis will be hoping for
better luck next time out, having exceeded his own expectations so
far this season.
Jack Clarke - R1: 9th,
R2: 14th
The young Englishman showed flashes of front-running pace over the
weekend, and was unlucky to miss out on a point's
finish. Having qualified 13th and 20th
for the two races, Clarke made a storming start in race one
and quickly moved up to seventh position, which included a
fantastic double overtake past Armaan Ebrahim and Jason Moore at
the Melbourne Loop. Unfortunately a spin dropped him down to ninth
and out of the points. He improved six places in race two to finish
14th, impressively setting the fourth fastest lap of the
race.
Sebastian
Hohenthal - R1: 6th, R2: 5th
Sweden's Sebastian Hohenthal enjoyed his best weekend of
the season at Donington Park, collecting his first points of the
year with well-earned top six finishes in both races. The weekend
started well when he topped the timesheets in free practice, before
qualifying eighth and then second for the two races - missing out
on pole by little over a tenth of a second. In race one a good
start saw him running a comfortable fifth until contact with Jousse
dropped him down the order, but he fought back to claim sixth at
the chequered flag - setting the second fastest lap in the process.
He struggled to get away cleanly in race two and dropped to fourth,
and whilst pressurising Mirko Bortolotti for third fell victim to
an enterprising move by championship leader Andy Soucek. He will be
delighted to have finally registered points, and will hope to
carry on his recent good form in the next round at
Oschersleben.
Jason Moore - R1: 11th,
R2: DNF
Moore, a previous race winner at Donington Park in
Formula Palmer Audi, put in a consistent qualifying
performance this weekend and lined up 14th and
15th respectively for the two races,
though disappointed not to be in the top ten. He drove a
brilliant opening race after breaking his front wing whilst
fighting for points with Jack Clarke and Armaan Ebrahim. Struggling
with a lack of downforce for the remainder of the race, Moore drove
defensively to take an impressive 11th at the finish.
His second race ended prematurely when he was involved in a crash
at the Esses which eliminated a number of cars.
Jens Höing -
R1: DNF, R2: DNF
Jens suffered a weekend to forget at Donington Park, after
two early collisions with Nicola De Marco led to his retirement
from both races. He struggled with his car in the first qualifying
session and failed to record a competitive time, although
he improved in the second session to line up 23rd for race
two. Despite double disappointment in the two F2 races, he will be
looking forward to his home round at Oschersleben, and his previous
experience of the track may well provide him with his best chance
of a points finish this season.
Jolyon Palmer - R1:
16th, R2: 12th
Jolyon was in the thick of the action in both races at Donington.
In the first he was involved in a six way battle between Jason
Moore, Mirko Bortolotti, Germán Sánchez, Carlos
Iaconelli and Henri Karjalainen for tenth position. His race ended
prematurely, however, when he came together in dramatic fashion
with Iaconelli after an optimistic move down the inside
at the Fogarty Esses. In race two he produced a solid performance
to finish 12th, rapidly closing down Germán Sánchez
in 11th after finding a way past Jason Moore.
Germán
Sánchez - R1: 12th, R2: 11th
Germán enjoyed his best weekend of the season so far at
Donington Park, and will have been encouraged to be challenging for
the top ten in each qualifying session. He recorded his best-ever
position of 13th in second qualifying, before equalling his best
race result of 11th in race one. He added a solid 12th place
in race two, and his recent improvement suggests he could be one to
watch at Oschersleben.
Natacha Gachnang -
R1: 13th, R2: DNF
The Swiss female racer had a challenging time at Donington Park.
She struggled to find the ultimate pace through the slow corners
during qualifying and lined up 19th and 22nd
on the grid. She did, however, show better race pace and improved
to take 13th in race one. Natacha recovered from a slow
getaway off the line in race two, only to retire after a spin
at Goddards.
Pietro Gandolfi -
R1: DNF, R2: 15th
The affable Italian struggled to learn the tough
Donington Park Grand Prix circuit, and lost time to his rivals
through the slow Goddards corner and the Esses. Having made
progress in recent rounds, the Italian was disappointed with his
weekend in England. After failing to finish in the opening race, he
did manage to cross the line in race two, finishing
15th.
