Driver Summaries: Rounds 11 & 12 Oschersleben
Rounds eleven and twelve of the 2009 FIA Formula
Two Championship took place at Oschersleben at the
weekend and the official F2 website has taken a
look at each driver's performance:
Andy Soucek - R1: 1st,
R2: 2nd
The consistently impressive Soucek extended his
championship lead after converting pole position into a commanding
victory in race one on Saturday. The Spaniard put in a flawless
drive, pulling away from the pack after several of his rivals were
caught up in a first corner incident. On Sunday, Andy improved from
third on the grid to take second after he passed Julien Jousse at
turn two on the opening lap. The 24-year-old now lies 32 points
ahead of Mikhail Aleshin in second place with only 40 remaining
points on offer - a win in the opening race at Imola will secure
him the inaugural FIA Formula Two Championship.
Mikhail Aleshin - R1:
5th, R2: 1st
The Russian put in a remarkable performance during the
Oschersleben weekend, culminating in his maiden Formula Two victory
on Sunday. He took his first pole position during Saturday's second
qualifying session, shortly before drama struck on the opening lap
of race one. Starting ninth on the grid, Aleshin became
airborne during a multi-car crash on the first lap but still went
on to finish fifth. Mikhail led from pole position in race two and
endured what he called 'the hardest race of his life' as he fended
off both Andy Soucek and Julien Jousse behind. He now lies second
in the overall standings.
Robert Wickens - R1:
8th, R2: 4th
A solid qualifying performance saw Robert start third and
fifth for the two races. The Canadian made a good start in the
opening race and briefly held second on the run down to turn one.
His Red Bull-backed colleague Mirko Bortolotti fought back to take
second on the inside as Tobias Hegewald out-braked himself behind -
the German then hit Wickens, sending him into a spin. Robert
rejoined at the back of the field and put in a stellar recovery
drive, which included aggressive moves past Natacha Gachnang and
Armaan Ebrahim. He eventually took the final point in eighth. He
then jumped Bortolotti at the start of race two and held fourth
place for the duration of the 18 lap contest.
Julien Jousse - R1: DNF,
R2: 3rd
Jousse started where he left off at Donington Park by
topping free practice at Oschersleben on Friday morning. He took
fourth and second during the two qualifying sessions, before he was
struck by bad luck during the opening race. After a decent start in
race one, Julien's tyre was punctured by Tobias Hegewald after the
German had triggered a big crash at turn one. The Frenchman was
unable to continue but responded well in race two as he challenged
for the lead at the first corner. His attempt failed and he was
then seized upon for second by championship leader Andy Soucek -
Jousse then pressured Soucek for the duration of the race to take a
well earned podium.
Mirko Bortolotti
- R1: 2nd, R2: DNF
Bortolotti had another strong weekend in Oschersleben,
qualifying inside the top four for both races and picking up his
fourth podium of the year in race one. Starting from second, he had
to defend his position going into the first corner and from there
drove faultlessly, finishing just over six seconds behind race
winner Andy Soucek. Bortolotti failed to get away cleanly in race
two however, and dropped down the order on the run down to the
first corner. He was unable to make up the lost ground, and retired
from the race after 15 laps. He will be encouraged by his pace,
however, and will be looking for two strong finishes in his home
race at Imola.
Tobias Hegewald - R1:
DNF, R2: 6th
Tobias put in a solid performance during practice and
qualifying, but the German was unable to secure the front row
starting berth at his home race he expected. Starting seventh in
race one, Tobias made a phenomenal start and was up to fourth just
a few hundred yards off the line. Unfortunately Tobias tried one
last passing attempt before the first corner, but the move was too
late and he hit Robert Wickens from behind. This triggered a
multi-car incident and Hegewald retired. He responded well in race
two to improve from eighth to take sixth at the finish - after
pressuring Nicola De Marco and Wickens ahead.
Philipp Eng - R1: DNF, R2:
DNF
After two superb rounds in the UK, where he picked up his
maiden victory and maiden pole, Eng came to Germany in impressive
form. The weekend proved to be a struggle, however, and early
incidents in both races mean he leaves Oschersleben without adding
to his impressive points haul. In race one he was helplessly caught
out in the first corner melee, and retired from the race after
being put onto two wheels trying to avoid the carnage. In race two
he then had a spectacular barrel roll after contact with another
driver, and whilst he was unhurt he will be hoping to forget his
weekend and return to form when F2 visits Imola in a fortnight's
time.
Kazim
Vasiliauskas - R1: 3rd, R2: 7th
Kazim enjoyed one of the best weekends of his campaign so
far, recording two points scoring finishes for the first time this
year. The Lithuanian continues to impress as one of the surprise
packages of the year, and his talent was in evidence again in
Germany as he picked up his third podium of 2009 in race one.
Having qualified 11th for race two, he made steady
progress through the field to finish seventh at the chequered flag,
and his return of eight points from the two races has helped him
consolidate eighth in the championship standings.
Miloš
Pavlović - R1: DNF, R2: 21st
Miloš made a fine start to his weekend in
Oschersleben, setting the eighth and sixth fastest times
respectively in free practice before improving to take fifth in
first qualifying. From there, however, it proved to be a weekend to
forget, as misfortune prevented the Serbian from recording the
results his pace deserved. In race one he was caught out in the
first corner incident after trying to avoid Wickens' stricken car.
After failing to set a competitive time in second qualifying, he
started race two from the pit lane. He was only able to improve to
21st position, but again proved his pace by setting the
fastest lap of the race. Miloš will be hoping for better
luck next time out in Imola.
Edoardo Piscopo - R1:
12th, R2: 8th
One of only four drivers to have scored points in every
round so far, Piscopo managed to maintain the proud trend despite a
challenging weekend in Germany. The Italian could only qualify
17th and 14th for the two races - slightly
disappointing by his high standards - but he proved his growing
reputation as a brilliant racer to come through the field on both
occasions. In race one he finished 12th, right on the
tail of Natacha Gachnang and Ollie Hancock, whilst in race two he
came through to finish eighth, Alex Brundle one of many to fall
victim to his fine racecraft. If he can improve in qualifying, he
could well be a podium contender come his home race in
Imola.
Carlos Iaconelli -
R1: 4th, R2: 10th
From eighth on the grid in the opening race, Carlos
improved up to fifth in the early stages. He pressured Sebastian
Hohenthal who later spun and Iaconelli inherited a well deserved
fourth place. He was part of a four-way scrap for eighth place in
race two, as a gaggle of cars were behind the fading Alex Brundle.
Edoardo Piscopo and Hohenthal got by the Englishman first, before
Carlos made his move late in the race. It was too late to catch
back up with the two ahead and he had to settle for a solid top ten
finish.
Nicola De Marco - R1:
6th, R2: 5th
De Marco has had something of a torrid time in races of
late, and has failed to score points since his superb weekend in
Brno. The Italian halted the trend with a solid display in Germany
though, picking up points in both races. In the opening race he
moved from 13th to 6th with some superb
overtaking, and enjoyed a particularly absorbing battle with Jack
Clarke. He repeated the feat in race two, moving from seventh to
fifth and pressurising Robert Wickens as the chequered flag fell.
His haul of seven points from the weekend means he is once again in
contention for tenth in the championship, and he will be looking to
leapfrog rivals Carlos Iaconelli and Edoardo Piscopo next time out
in Imola.
Henri
Karjalainen - R1: 13th, R2: 15th
The Finn struggled to get to grips with the technical
nature of the Oschersleben circuit on his first visit to the venue,
and was unable to mount a challenge for points. He did improve upon
his grid positions however, as he continued to increase his speed
as the weekend progressed. From 19th on the grid, Henri
improved six positions in race one to take 13th at the
finish after picking his way through the first corner melee. He
made up one place in race two and scored a top 15 finish.
Sebastian Hohenthal
- R1: 17th, R2: 9th
Sebastian once again ran at the sharp end of the pack in
Oschersleben, although he will be slightly disappointed to leave
without adding to his points haul after running a promising fourth
in race one. He had qualified 11th, but some feisty
driving in the opening lap saw him scythe through the field and
claim fourth. He was determined to push for a podium but spun out
whilst hounding down Kazim Vasiliauskas in third. He started ninth
for race two, and despite several overtaking attempts could not
improve through the race. Having struggled to make an impact early
on in the season, the Swede's campaign is in full flow and he will
likely be challenging at the front again in Imola.
Armaan Ebrahim - R1:
9th, R2: 13th
Armaan was once again unable to qualify as high as he
would have liked, but he responded with his usual impressive race
pace and gutsy driving. After an amazing start from 21st
on the grid, the Indian driver found himself in the points early on
in race one after a staggering improvement of some 13 places. He
had an eye catching battle with Robert Wickens for the final point,
but lost out following a trip across the grass at turn 11 after the
pair made contact. He finished 13th in Sunday's race -
overall he improved by a total of 16 places during the two
contests.
Jack Clarke - R1: 7th,
R2: DNF
Oschersleben proved to be a weekend of mixed fortunes for
Jack Clarke. The 21-year-old struggled to show his true pace in
qualifying, taking 15th in race one before spinning off
early in the second session, leaving him 25th in the
standings. His race pace was strong, however, and he made the most
of the first corner pile-up in race one to break into the points
paying position and finish seventh at the conclusion.
Alex Brundle - R1: DNF,
R2: 11th
A mighty impressive performance during qualifying hailed
a return to form for Alex, but he was unable to capitalise in the
race to score the points that his pace deserved. A ninth in
qualifying one was followed with sixth in the next session - his
second best position of the season. Battling for points in the
opening race, Brundle was let down by an alternator failure on lap
ten. He again ran in the points during race two, but faded a little
towards the finish to come home a creditable 11th. It
was still another encouraging weekend for Alex's first season in
international racing.
Tom Gladdis - R1: 16th,
R2: 17th
18-year-old Tom Gladdis had a difficult weekend in
Germany, and whilst he was able to make up several places in each
race he was unable to show his typical pace in qualifying. He
started race one from 23rd, and set about working his
way through the field to eventually finish 16th when the
race ended. In qualifying two he was caught out by the fluctuating
conditions and was unable to set a competitive time as other
drivers switched to slicks. He had another strong race, however,
improving four places to 17th after a good battle with
Jolyon Palmer. He will head to Imola hoping to rediscover his
impressive earlier season form.
Jason Moore - R1:
14th, R2: 20th
Moore set the outright pace during the early stages of
the opening practice session in Germany, before settling for fifth
position at the finish - relegating double Spa race winner Tobias
Hegewald down to sixth. He badly hurt his thumb whilst spinning
during the opening qualifying session, but bravely returned to set
the tenth quickest time in qualifying two - his best result of the
season. Along with Jolyon Palmer, he was delayed by the first
corner incident in race one, but still managed to take a solid
14th place finish. Jason made a stellar start in race
two and held eighth on the opening lap until an unfortunate spin
left him way down the order.
Jens Höing - R1:
DNF, R2: 14th
Following an encouraging performance during Friday's
practice sessions, Jens then scored his best qualifying results of
the season with 16th and 13th respectively.
Backed by huge support from his sponsors at Haskamp, Jens was sadly
caught up in the multi-car accident at turn one in the first race,
retiring on the spot. He responded well on Sunday to take a
battling 14th place, having held off Red Bull-backed
Mirko Bortolotti midway through the race.
Jolyon Palmer - R1: 15th,
R2: 19th
Jolyon endured a challenging weekend on his first visit
to Oschersleben. It was a steep learning curve for the young
Englishman as the technical nature of the circuit proved difficult
to master. Having qualified 18th and 24th,
Jolyon made good progress during the two races. He was delayed by
the first corner incident in race one, but he still managed to
improve by a total of eight positions over the two
contests - a solid 15th in race one being his
reward.
Germán
Sánchez - R1: DNF, R2: 16th
Spanish Formula 3 champion Sánchez struggled at
the highly technical Oschersleben circuit. Difficulties in
qualifying saw Sanchez start race one from the back of the
grid having completed just four laps in the session. Having
avoided the first corner incident, Sanchez was unable to go much
further and was forced to retire early in the race. Having
qulaified further up the field for race two, Sánchez
produced a strong midfield drive to move up to 16th place by the
flag.
Natacha Gachnang -
R1: 11th, R2: 12th
Natacha enjoyed the best weekend of her season at
Oschersleben, and challenged for top ten honours in both qualifying
sessions and races. She qualified 12th for race one -
her second-best grid position of the season - and managed to
navigate the first corner melee to finish 11th at the
chequered flag, pressuring Ollie Hancock in tenth in the final
stages of the race. She repeated her qualifying position for race
two, and whilst she was unable to again move through the field she
impressed again with her hard charging style. In this form, she
will certainly be aiming to pick up her maiden points finish at
Imola.
Pietro Gandolfi - R1:
DNF, R2: 22nd
21-year-old Pietro scored his best qualifying position of
the season for race two when the Italian chalked up a tenth row
starting berth. He did however struggle to get to grips with the
technical nature of the Oschersleben and had several spins over the
course of the weekend. His race pace did not match his qualifying
speed, but he was able to take a solid race finish during Sunday's
contest. He is already looking forward to rounds 13 and 14, where
he will race at his home circuit in Imola.
Ollie Hancock - R1:
10th. R2: 18th
Ollie Hancock enjoyed a remarkably strong opening weekend
at Oschersleben, and took a top ten finish at the first time of
asking despite having tested only once before arriving at the
circuit. By his own admission, the main target of the weekend was
to gain seat time and experience, but he will no doubt be
encouraged by the improvements he was able to make in between each
session. He also demonstrated good racecraft to hold off Natacha
Gachnang in race one, and again in race two when he was part of a
five-strong pack in the chase for 14th place. With his
first weekend under his belt, he will be hoping to continue
improving next time out at Imola.
