Brundle aims for season best at Barcelona
Young Briton enjoys maiden season of international motorsport
Alex Brundle has enjoyed an encouraging maiden season in
international motorsport and the 19-year-old is keen to end his
campaign on a high in Barcelona.
The luck has not been with the young Briton in recent rounds,
and he was cruelly denied a solid points finish in Imola. As Mirko
Bortolotti's car began to drop oil all over the circuit in race
two, Brundle was a mere passenger as his car darted off into the
barriers after running through it Tamburello.
"Of course I was massively disappointed, but racing is racing
and these things happen," said Brundle. "You have to take it on the
chin but I think I was on for fourth place, which would have been
my best result so far. It's a shame but it has happened now so I am
looking to just move forward."
His eventful campaign has included some stellar drives at
circuits like Valencia, Spa-Francorchamps and Imola, but his
performances have not always brought home the points that Brundle's
pace has deserved.
"I think I have been massively unfortunate at times this
season," commented Brundle. "When I think back I should have had
two points finishes at Oschersleben and the shunt that I had at Spa
probably prevented me from getting another points finish. There is
a big discrepancy between what I should have got and what I have
got but that's the way it goes sometimes. The important thing is
that I have shown potential rather than an inability to run at the
front. I think the trained eye can see that - I have shown I can
run at the front at places like Spa and Imola against some very
experienced drivers. Some of these guys are three, four or five
years older than me and I expect to be at their level of
consistency sooner rather than later."
With the season drawing to a conclusion at Barcelona in less
than four weeks' time, Brundle is excited about further showing his
potential at a circuit he thinks will suit his style.
"I am really looking forward to going to Spain - Barcelona is an
absolutely mega track," he said. "My dad also knows the F1 circuits
really well and it helps massively to go through every bump and
detail before the weekend. Hopefully we can do that and I am
confident I can show good pace there.
"I'm just looking to take the best results possible. I was
realistic enough to know that I wouldn't be challenging for the
championship in my first year but it was important to show
people that I could challenge in the future, and I think that I
have done it. Hopefully I can end the season with some good results
in Barcelona."
Having learnt so much in Formula Two this season, Brundle is
like several drivers who are looking to progress
even further in their second campaign of international
racing.
"I have discussed the options with my Dad and I have really
enjoyed this year," concluded Alex. "The concept of F2 is mega and
the championship has really delivered. I have to keep my options
open at this stage but I would certainly like to come back to F2
for another year."
