As it happened: Brno free practice two
Minute by minute updates on the second session in the Czech Republic
Sergey Afanasiev claimed top spot in today's second free
practice session at Brno. With a much drier track than in the first
session, times tumbled and were more than 20 seconds quicker than
earlier in the day. You can read how the session panned out
below:
15.44 - For the second time today the F2
session ends under a red flag. Sergey Afanasiev topped the time
sheets almost un-noticed, just squeezing out Kazim by
just 0.014 seconds. Tom Gladdis was an impressive third ahead
of Bailly and Eng. Championship contenders Dean Stoneman and Jolyon
Palmer were seventh and 13th respectively. They will be looking to
improve in qualifying tomorrow, Palmer especially after looking so
convincing in the wet conditions this morning.
15.42 - We have a yellow flag in the second
sector, a car is off at turn five. It's Plamen Kralev and the
session has been red flagged.
15.41 - De Marco moves up to fifth, but Bailly
is third, two personal bests in the first and last sectors for the
Belgian.
15.40 - Kazim's really flying, setting a
personal best in the opening sector and is quickest of all in the
second sector. Can he move top? Yes he does, a storming lap, he's
0.376s ahead of Gladdis!
15.39 - Kazim Vasiliauskas is up to sixth on a
1:48.241.
15.37 - Gladdis sets a purple first sector on
his next lap, but an ordinary middle sector. It's a personal best
final sector though and Tom is top of the pile. Meanwhile,
Stoneman's been off in the gravel at turn five but returns on
track. That's his lap ruined though.
15.34 - It's an OK time in sector one, nothing
special, and sector two fails to see an improvement either. But
it's a great last sector and Stoneman's up to second. Gladdis
improves also and he's up to third.
15.32 - The track is a little quiet at the
moment with only five drivers circulating. Stoneman's back out
though, let's see what he can do.
15.31 - Benjamin Bailly is on it and passes
Parthiva Sureshwaren into turn one, there have been a few overtakes
already this session.
15.30 - Nicola De Marco has moved into fifth,
0.5s behind Eng who is in the pits. Tom Gladdis is sixth with
Clarke just behind.
15.29 - Eng's had a spin at turn four and
has abandoned his lap, he must have been pushing a little too hard
after setting that fast time.
15.28 - Philipp Eng moves to the top of the
time sheet with a 1:47.872. Expect further improvements as the
track rubbers in.
15.27 - Jolyon Palmer's had a spin at turn 13,
but has continued. The morning pace setter is in 10th at the moment
0.895 behind Afanasiev who goes fastest on a 1:48.090.
15.25 - Sergey Afanasiev sets a purple middle
sector and movess into fifth. Stoneman's just improved his time
again as does Philipp Eng who is just 0.035 behind.
15.23 - Jack Clarke improves and is up to
second, and Ivan Samarin moves into third. Philipp Eng moves above
them both though and into second on a 1:48.271.
15.21 - Stoneman's about to go top, and he does
on a 1:48.158. Three purple sectors there and he's over half a
second ahead. Benjamin Bailly moves into second but over half a
second behind.
15.18 - And the first driver to break the
timing beam is Sergey Afanasiev who sets a time of
1:49.806. Jack Clarke immediately betters it, as
does Dean Stoneman. Clarke sets a 1:49.645 with Stoneman
0.081s behind.
15.15 - The session is green and the cars are
back on track. It's still pretty gloomy overhead, but the track is
now much drier. All cars will be out on dry tyres.
15.10 - Welcome to live text commentary for the
second session at Brno. Jolyon Palmer was impressive in the first
session setting a string of fastest laps, but can he deliver again?
We'll find out in five minutes time.
