Built on the site of a former World War II airfield, the circuit
held its first race in September 1947. The Royal Automobile Club
took control of the venue shortly after and developed the circuit
for the inaugural British Grand Prix in 1950 - the first ever
Formula One World Championship event.
The circuit has undergone a number of different guises in the
past 62 years and has developed legendary corners starting from
Copse through to the Maggots and Becketts complex. A big
change to the configuration was made last year with the addition of
a new infield section that leaves the old circuit at Abbey via a
challenging high-speed corner. A tight series of bends leads
onto the new Wellington Straight, which provides a good overtaking
opportunity into Brooklands. Silverstone is one of the most
popular circuits for fans and drivers alike and many great drivers
have won at the historic venue, including former F1 world champion
Nigel Mansell. His victory at the 1991 British Grand Prix was
particularly memorable as he completed his slow-down lap with
Ayrton Senna sat on his car, the Brazilian having run out of fuel
on the final lap.
The circuit is a challenge for drivers as they will need to
set-up the car so that it has enough downforce for the slower
corners, whilst ensuring that the car carries enough speed down the
two long Straights.
Mirko Bortolotti and Miki Monras took a win a piece when F2
visited the British circuit last year with each securing
lights-to-flag victories together with a further podium that
weekend. The 2012 field will be aiming for similar success when the
new season commences at Silverstone this April.
Rounds one and two of the 2012 FIA Formula Two Championship get
underway at Silverstone on 13/15 April. For more information on the
circuit visit www.silverstone.co.uk
