Tobias Hegewald's heroics at Spa-Francorchamps remained the most
dominant
performance of any driver in 2009, the young German proving
unstoppable at
the legendary circuit in what he labelled the best weekend of his
career. Tobias
leapt up to F2 after two seasons in Formula Renault and immediately
made
his mark in the opening race in Valencia, when he was running
fourth until an
unavoidable collision with Andy Soucek meant he was unable to score
the
points his pace merited.
His first points duly arrived in the second race in Brno, where he
finished
seventh. But at the third event of the season at Spa, Hegewald was
immense.
Quite remarkably, he was fastest in both practices, both qualifying
sessions and
won both races. And he set the fastest lap in both races to
boot.
Further success followed, with Tobias taking points at each of the
next
five circuits. He also claimed his third pole of the year at
Donington Park,
a total bettered only by Robert Wickens. He finished the year sixth
in the
championship, having scored points from nine of the sixteen
races.
