Nicola De Marco enjoyed a really
promising season in Formula Two, ending the year in tenth position
overall but more importantly having achieved two magnificent
podiums and a pole position. The 19-year-old Italian joined Formula
Two after finishing fourth in the 2008 Spanish Formula 3
Championship, despite still being at college.
His year started superbly, qualifying fourth at Valencia and
finishing fifth in the second race. A fantastic weekend in Brno
then saw him master the tricky wet conditions and claim his maiden
pole position for race one. Enormously disappointingly, Nicola was
unable to capitalise on his pole after a sensor problem could not
be fixed before the pit exit closed and he was forced to start from
the pit lane. Nevertheless he qualified a great fourth for race two
and was leading for much of the race until a small spin dropped him
to down to a frustrated but still outstanding third and his maiden
podium.
Nicola's best result was yet to come though and after picking up
points in both races at Oschersleben he recorded his best result of
the year by finishing second in Barcelona, having started from
fourth, to the jubilation of his family and sponsors. The result
allowed him to jump Edoardo Piscopo and Carlos Iaconelli and clinch
tenth in the championship.
