Mirko Bortolotti joined Formula Two after a sensational season
in Italian Formula 3, where nine wins and 15 podiums helped him
claim the overall championship. He earned a test for the Ferrari F1
team as a result, and duly set an unofficial lap record around
Fiorano.
The Italian started his season in Formula Two in style, finishing
sixth in the opening race of the year in Valencia before clinching
second in race two - leaving him second in the championship after
the first weekend. He then scored his best result of the season in
Brno, qualifying on the front row before sealing his maiden series
victory to take the overall championship lead.
After a brief barren spell at Spa, he was back in the points at
Brands Hatch and scored podiums at Donington, Oschersleben and
Imola, a run that meant he remained in contention for the runner-up
spot up until the very last race of the season. As it was
Bortolotti had to eventually settle for fourth, but he had
impressed enough to be handed a full day's test with the Scuderia
Toro Rosso F1 team in December as a reward for his strong
performances.
