One of the youngest competitors in the 2009 Formula Two field at
18, Jolyon
leapt up to F2 from a third place in the 2008 Formula Palmer Audi
Championship.
He made a promising start in Valencia with a 13th in first
qualifying though often
ran in the 15th - 20th level as he gained experience.
The son of F2 boss Jonathan, Jolyon drove well with a great start
and avoided
the drama at the opening race at Brno to take tenth and then built
on this with
an excellent ninth in qualifying at Spa, the scene of a proud
victory in Formula
Palmer Audi in 2008. After a good start he was challenging for
sixth on the first
lap until becoming a victim of a tangle ahead, damaging his front
wing and
dropping down the order.
Jolyon was poised to score his first point at Brands Hatch in race
one after
qualifying a strong 11th until making a mistake on the safety car
restart. In the
second fateful race he was a mere 20m ahead of poor Henry Surtees
and was
only just missed by the errant wheel himself. After unremarkable
Donington and
Oschersleben events, Jolyon progressed strongly over the final two
rounds and
was thrilled to take his first points with a 6th at Imola and he
finished the year
with strong midfield performances at Barcelona.
