Andy Soucek, like Robert Wickens, came to F2 to win the
championship and prove his right to an F1 seat. Never having been
able to fund a solid drive with a front-running team in GP2, the
low cost, equal opportunity F2 was just what Soucek wanted. He had
confidence in his ability and delivered majestically. Soucek was a
class apart in Formula Two, the Spaniard setting a relentless pace
by taking seven wins and finishing the championship 51 points clear
of Robert Wickens.
Things didn't get off to a good start though. Running second in the
first race of the season at Valencia, Soucek's fuel pump failed.
Despite the disappointment of retiring from his home race, Andy's
maturity didn't leave him rattled and he marched on from there. In
the second race in Brno, a fantastic start enabled him to move from
sixth to second by the first corner and later a mistake by Nicola
De Marco handed him his first F2 win. Top four finishes followed in
both races at Spa-Francorchamps, before he won again at Brands
Hatch, finishing runner-up in the other race to take a clear
championship lead. He took another victory at Donington, before
finishing on the podium in the next four races at Oschersleben and
Imola, clinching the championship crown in the process.
After securing the title Andy ended the season in emphatic style by
taking victory in both races at Barcelona at the end of an
incredible run of never being outside the top four in the final 13
races of the season. Importantly, everyone in F2 recognised that
Andy Soucek was the deserving champion and to underline F2's
competitiveness, driving at his prize Williams F1 test at Jerez
Andy put in an outstanding performance to outpace a host of
talented young rivals and record the fastest time of the day.
