United Kingdom

Great Britain is the ninth largest island in the world, and is the third most populated on Earth. At its height the British Empire encompassed almost a quarter of the world's land surface, making it the largest empire in history. As a result, British influence can still be observed in the language, culture and legal systems of many of its former territories.

The UK is the world's sixth largest economy by nominal GDP and was the world's first industrialised country and remains a great power with leading economic, cultural, military, scientific and political influence.

Brands Hatch - Why Go?

Recognised as one of the world's great circuits, the layout of Brands Hatch is largely untouched, despite meeting modern-day safety standards. The circuit lies to the South-East of London, not far over the Kent border.

The city of London is one of the world's busiest, with modern commerce sitting side-by-side with historic landmarks, including the Tower of London, St Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. London is also a popular shopping location, rivalled by the Bluewater complex, one of Europe's largest, just a few minutes away from the circuit. Kent is also rich with history, with the City of Canterbury home to the Anglican Church.

Useful Information

Just a few minutes away from the M25 ring road, which is easily reached from Heathrow, Gatwick and Stanstead airports, Brands Hatch is also close to Swanley and Eynsford rail stations, which connect to London. For more information on the circuit click here

Brands Hatch Grand Prix
Length: 4.206km
Turns: 9

Brands Hatch has established itself as a regular on the Formula Two trail with the series returning there for its fourth year this summer.

Originally a military training ground used occasionally by local motorcycle enthusiasts as a dirt track, Brands Hatch has grown into one of the finest circuits in the UK. The first race was held in the area in 1928, but it was not until 1950 that the circuit was surfaced, creating a one mile oval course for cars. The track continued to expand over the next few years, including the addition of Druids bend, and in 1956 Brands Hatch hosted its first Formula Two race.

The 2.65 mile Grand Prix circuit was then constructed in 1959, and after a change of ownership a deal was struck for the circuit to host the British Grand Prix alongside Silverstone, with the circuits alternating each year. On July 11 1964 Brands Hatch held its first Formula One Grand Prix, with Britain's Jim Clark taking the victory.

To date, the last Grand Prix was held at Brands Hatch in 1986, with Nigel Mansell taking the spoils. However the venue continues to host major international events and a chance to race on the full circuit is relished by drivers all over the world. The challenging combination of sweeping corners and changing gradients favours a fine handling car but a good top speed is needed for the long back straight.

Brands Hatch will host rounds nine and ten of the 2012 FIA Formula Two Championship on 14/15 July.
