The Country
Capital: London     Population: 62 million     Currency: Pound sterling

The United Kingdom is an archipelago which includes the territories of four countries: Great Britain, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A constitutional monarchy, the UK also has overseas territories which are not constitutionally part of the kingdom but are remnants of the British Empire which in 1922 encompassed almost a quarter of the globe - the largest empire in history. Although Great Britain was officially formed in 1606, the country bears monuments to over 2,000 years of civilisation, giving it one of the richest cultural and historical backgrounds in the world. In modern times it has grown as an economic power after becoming the first industrialised country, and it is now the world's sixth largest economy with major influence in global finance, politics, science and culture.

Brands Hatch - Why Go?
Brands Hatch is one of the world's most famous motor racing circuits, with a history that dates back to 1928 when the first dirt bike races were held on the grounds of what later became the permanent Indy Circuit. In 1960 the Grand Prix loop was added, and in 1964 Brands Hatch held its first Formula One World Championship race, which was won by Jim Clark. Although to date the last Grand Prix to be held at Brands Hatch was in 1986, with Nigel Mansell the winner, the circuit continues to hold some of the biggest races in the UK and is also one of the busiest circuits in Europe. Recent upgrades to the track, the venue and its facilities have been led by MotorSport Vision and have helped re-establish Brands Hatch as one of the UK's premier circuits.

Brands' appeal is also linked to its close proximity with London, the capital city of England and one of the most vibrant, bustling and metropolitan cities in the world. First settled by the Romans, the city has been a major settlement for millennia and is now one of the world's largest financial centres, home to more than 100 of Europe's top 500 companies. London is also a major tourist destination, with four World Heritage sites and several world renowned buildings including the Houses of Parliament and St Paul's Cathedral. London's influence in politics, finance, education, entertainment, media, fashion, arts and culture continue to ensure London's position as one of the world's foremost cities.

Useful Information
Thanks in part to its proximity to London, Brands Hatch benefits from excellent transport links, with the M25 motorway passing to the north and the M20 providing road links from Dover in the south. Access to the track via the M20 is especially useful for those travelling from mainland Europe via the Euro Tunnel, whilst the Eurostar rail stops at London St. Pancras and Ebbsfleet International in Dartford. Brands Hatch also has excellent air links, with London Gatwick, London Heathrow, London Stansted and London City airports all close to the circuit.

For those with portable radios, Radio Brands will be available throughout the weekend on 87.7 FM, offering full commentary from every session.
